Google is one of the newer Web search engines. In Feb. 1999 it moved from Alpha test version to Beta and on Sept. 21, 1999 it officially launched. It has made its mark for its relevance ranking based on link analysis. It introduced phrase searching and the - for NOT, but had rather limited search features and no OR operation for a long time. In Oct. 2000, it finally started processing OR. In June 2000 it announced a database of over 560 million pages.
Debuting in May 1999, the Norwegian company, Fast Search and Transfer, offered their Fast search engine at www.alltheweb.com running on Dell computers. They plan on using the Inktomi business model which means they should start becoming available at other search engine sites as well. The first hint of their expansion comes in January 2000 with the appearance of their database on the Lycos Pro advanced search.

Excite is one of the smaller search engines. But it is very well known, provides sophisticated personalization, offers excellent relevant results for very popular queries, and its News Search provides important access to Web versions of newspapers, magazines, and news wires.
